NEWS

10/24/19
The website has been neglected for some time. I will begin to update it again regularly. Many new things are happening.

1. My wife, Anne Herbert, received 1st place at the SECAC juried exhibition in Chattanooga, TN.
2. My solo exhibition, Shadowtime, at University of Montevallo seemed to be a success. I appreciate all of the assistance from Tanner Young (sculpture faculty.) The gallery talk was well attended and the overall feedback was very positive.
3. Dirt x Digital at Clemson University looked incredible and I am very happy to be included among the invitees: Jeff Campana, Anna Callouri Holcombe, Taekyeom Lee, Shalya Marsh, Matt Mitros, and Elaine Quave. Special thanks to Valerie Zimany, Daniel Bare, and Denise Dietrich for including me.
4. I presented at the annual SECAC conference on a panel titled "Contemporary Ceramics?" moderated by Jeff Schmuki. Others on the panel were Raoul Pacheco and Kenyon Holder.
5. I have two cups included in "The Cup, The Mug" exhibition at Main Street Arts in Clifton Springs, NY.
6. I will also participate in "LUSH" contemporary ceramics exhibition at Lighthouse Art Center in Tequesta, FL.

Stay tuned...

I just recently received word that one of my pieces will be included in the 32nd annual Material: Hard&Soft exhibition in Denton, TX.

This month, I will be a Visiting Artist at VCU in Craft and Material Studies. I have also been awarded 2nd place at Workhouse Clay International.

I feel incredibly honored and excited to be featured in the August/September issue of American Craft Magazine: The Color Issue. The article is very thoughtful; thanks to Megan Guerber. This month, I also took over the NCECA instagram account for a week and received some wonderful feedback. Additionally, I will be traveling to Workhouse Art Center to drop off work for the Workhouse Clay International juried by Eva Kwong. Thank you all for the continued support!

I just finished the photo shoot for a feature article that will be published in American Craft Magazine this August!

I have been so incredibly busy for the past four months; I've had little time to report on what has been happening in my life and art practice. This year, I was awarded NCECA Emerging Artist. The conference just ended and the dust is beginning to settle. It was the one of the most memorable and nurturing experiences of my life. Thank you all for showing your support.. Everyone that I encountered at NCECA was overwhelmingly generous. Special thanks to Matt Ziemke and Jason Hackett for assisting with my installation at the convention center. Thanks to my students for assisting with the de-installation.

We just wrapped up the firs annual University of Alabama wood firing at Arrowmont School of Art and Craft. It was an incredible amount of work and a very rewarding experience for all involved. We will unload this coming weekend.

Tactic II is up and looks great at Kennedy Museum of Art at Ohio University. I was notified in October that the exhibition that I proposed for NCECA in Pittsburg was accepted. Parallel/Collision will be a part of the up coming conference and will feature work by Jason Hackett, Matt Ziemke, Julie Malen, Matt Mitros, and myself. The next endeavor is to make a buch of wood fired work for the wood kiln at Arrowmont. After, complete work for NCECA. Cheers!

This month, Anne Herbert and I put together an exhibit titled "Ghost Skin." It is currently on view at Lowe Mill Art Center in Huntsville, AL. The next big push is to finish several commissions then work towards the traveling TACTIC exhibition that will first go to the Kennedy Museum of Art at Ohio University. TACTIC will then travel to the Gertrude Herbert Museum in Athens, Georgia. After, it will possibly travel to Richmond, VA. Much is in the works!

This fall is shaping up to be a busy one. September 1st marks the opening of the exhibition at Lowe Mill Art Center with Anne Herbert. In October, a group exhibition titled "Tactic II" will open at Ohio University's Kennedy Museum of Art.

The AIA group residency at Red Lodge Clay Center has concluded. The whole experience was truly life altering. It is always welcome to glimpse the way that other artists think and make. The entire crew at RLCC was incredibly supportive and the AIA exhibition looks well considered; the curatorial decisions are apparent, kudos to the gallery staff. The obvious highlights, besides working in the studio with talented and thoughtful folks, were Lake Yellowstone, Beartooth Pass, and hiking with Matt Ziemke and Jason Hackett to the find Glacier Lake and ultimately not finding it. The joy is in the journey, not the destination.

The MCAC Professors exhibition tent looks great! It's always a pleasure to represent UA. The opening is today. I'm getting ready for the website to explode! Red Lodge piece is ready to ship and I am taking photos shortly. The new piece will be up on the site by tomorrow.

The new website is up. Some changes, not many. News has its own page again and I have split the resources page into three categories. I hope to have artists' websites linked soon. Today, I head to Birmingham, Alabama to set up a piece at the MCAC (Magic City Arts Connection). There are many exciting aspects of this art event, outreach is one, working with the students from ASFA (Alabama School of Fine Arts) is another. Special thanks to Pete Schulte for the opportunity to represent The University of Alabama Department of Art and Art History.

Tomorrow, I ship a new piece to Red Lodge Clay Center for the AIA (Artists Invite Artists) exhibition that will open in early June. Our group is Matt Mitros, John Byrd, Julie Malen, Jason Hackett, Matt Ziemke, and myself. I'm extremely excited to work alongside these talented folks in June.  Stay tuned...
